Laying the Kitchen concrete. The kitchen concrete slab was laid by a firm that delivers and mixes at your door. I paid them extra to level and rough float it. Kids do come in handy for all those site jobs you don't like doing yourself

Fitting half a kilometer of wet underfloor heating pipes. The wet underfloor heating pipes are tied to a concrete reinforcing mesh laid on top of xps insulation and an additional cusioned and sand blinded dpm. We double the pipe spacing to give a faster heating response time to the 100mm thick concrete slab. The joints of the xps are taped to prevent a cold bridge (where the floor concrete seeps through the insulation gaps. Upstairs heating pipes are laid in a batterned space betweek the floor joists, these are fileld with 300mm filbre insulation. The blue paint marks on the floor and wall are to show the position of internal timber partitions - hence no pipes near these to be drilled through. The kitchen heating pipes were laid in four seperate circuits to provide a degree of redundancy in the even of failure of one or more of the pipes.

Pictures from the Edinburgh Stag do, taking in the Western Bar, Liquorice - Would have done the burke 'n' hare too, had it not been closed, 19th January 2006, 20th January 2006 and 21st January - don't mention ice, chocolate, cigarettes or whipping. This excursion started with the advanced party of seven on the Thursday night with everyone else catching up for the Friday and Saturday nights.

It's stll early January a very cold outside, the gas space heater can barely cope. So the windows and doors are fitted making us water tight. The concrete kitchen floor is scrubbed so to give a smooth surface for the cusioning, dpm and floor insulation.

Glenn Blythe chops up the front of the garage concrete floor slab with his stihl saw. Because we decided to install the garage door behind the reveals, we would have been left with unsightly concrete slab at the end of the driveway. Luckily the steel reinforcing mesh in the concrete was not continued into the garage door reveal. Still 150mm of concrete is a tough job.

Completion of major external structural work and roof means the scaffolding can come down, yep no more bruises from heads banged on the scaffolding. Also, the first time things start to take shape. As it's the middle of winter, the garage door is fitted and temporarily connected to make things more draught proof.

Completion of work on roof, including ridge tiles, pointing and gutters - A total of 1600 roof tiles were laid, two valleys 66 ridges and 1 cubic metre of mortar

Work on roof including bracing, infills, valleys, underlay, batterning and tiling

Erection and bracing of roof trusses for all three roofs. The main kitchen roof could not be completed until the roof on the second story was findished as the inner scaffold was removed. The kitchen roof space was constructed using attic trusses these give an open area with the cross members found in the usual fink trusses.

Pouring of 7 cubic metres of fibre and steel mesh reinforced concrete to provide 150mm ground supported slab for the garage - 100mm insulation was added in case of a change of use in the future.

Pouring of 12 cubic metres of fibre reinforced concrete to provide 200mm ground supported slab

Compaction and preparation of main sub-base to take 200mm fibre reinforced concrete slab, including laying a 1200 guage dpm. The entire kitchen and conservatory ground bearing slab was poured as one, the black dpm was used as an aid to placing the concrete. An addition dpm will be laid later on top of the concrete slab. The kitchen floor is formed using a 200mm fibre reinforced ground bearing slab, a cushioning layer with an additional dpm, 100mm XPS insulation, followed by 100mm mesh and fibre reinforced concrete layer containing the underfloor heating water pipes. We opted for a thick concrete layer to give a large insulated thermal mass for heating the kitchen.

Trench and oversite backfill and providing a new compacted sub-base to take the main ground bearing floor slab. A total of four 8 yard skips of dolomite was used to backfill and level the ground.

Construction of foundation blockwork up to ground level and moving old foul drains. The foundation groundwork was constucted with a mix of 300mm solid concrete block, engineering bricks and light weight blocks. The below dpc cavity was filled with a weak mix concrete.

Initial loading of concrete blocks for sub structure blockwork and routing of new drains. Two types of drainage pipework are needed, one for foul and one for surface water. All of the pipework has to have a minimum fall.

Pouring the concrete foundations, using a total of 14 cubic metres of concrete. We were able to use a conveyor truck mixer allowing us to reach the back of the founds without the back breaking work of wheel barrowing the concrete.

Starting the excavation of the new founds for the extension, around 16 skips were used to take away the spoil from foundation excavations and ground leveling. This was done with a 1 ton mini-digger and a 1 ton dumper. Some of the excavations are 1.3m below ground so quite an achievement for this digger.

The start of building work - knocking down the old garage. The old garage needed to be demolished to allow the extension to be built. The new kitchen sits on a slightly larger footprint than the old garage. In fact most of the garage brickwork was build off the existing garage foundation (after Building Control inspection) with a slight adjustment because on one side the original builders didn't build up off the centre of the garage foundation. This made the job easier as we would have had to rip up the old foundation if it wasn't reused.
